Summary: This dissertation seeks to identify the transformations in the port landscape of Vitória, through the historical analysis of your urban evolution, your development process, and your landfills, from the implantations of its ports. Vitória, a port city that was born and developed along with its port, has undergone significant changes on your landscape. This landscape, which is a reflex of a complex and symbiotic relationship between portcity,
common in port cities dynamics, can be characterized, with the necessaries
temporal adaptations, in each time period. Analyzes the port landscape transformations using two main theoretical-methodological references: Hoyle Model (1989), that addresses an analysis with a historical and chronological perspective the development of port-city interface and the Landscape Analysis and Construction Method proposed by Mendonça (2005), whose methodology proposes among others aspects, identification, characterization and perception of main natural and constructive landscape references.
Were realized conceptual approaches about landscape and identification of methods to be used in this study. About the empirical context, the port city relationship was analyzed, from the historical and participatory approach, with emphasis on the landscape transformation, examining the sources that were constituted of original documents, academic papers, technical studies, town planning laws, photographs, postcards and field research. To identify the elements that characterize the contemporary port landscape, which was addressed in regional, metropolitan and seaside metropolitan scale, a field survey was done called the waters route. In this changing transformation, which contributes to the construction of the place collective memory, there are losses, gains and stays with the implementation and development of its ports. It was evidenced that Vitória, whose foundation officially refers to the year
1551, which was born squeezed between the sea and the mountains and has developed along the wood quay and timber wharfs, with warehouses facing the bay, keeps always, in port function, one of its main economic and cultural forces. Vitórias port-city relationship characterizes, either by proximity and dependency, with its quays and timber wharfs; for expansion and development with its linear pier, sometimes by physical separation between port and city and search for new territories in industrial landscape and, currently, is pursuing for rapprochement. The study concluded that Vitória has characterized in its landscapes the references marks of the port-city relationship, that
shows a temporal difference from the periodization proposed by Hoyle (1989).In this context, seeks to draw attention to the continuing importance of the port on Vitórias landscape, becoming, despite the structural changes occurred over time, an relevant element of the local culture.
