Summary: The present study is part of the thematic triad Territory - Heritage - Water, whose
reflection is inserted in the problem of territorial disruption in the contemporary scope,
mainly made explicit in the enlargement of the society's explorative relations with
natural elements. The research is theoretically referenced in the studies of Alberto
Managhi, who discusses the territory from heritage and strategic perspective for local
development. Brazilian geographers RogérioHaesbart and Milton Santos are the
other authors that give supportto this study. In this sense, this study focuses on the
understanding of water as a structuring element of territory and strategic for the
valorization of territorial heritage. The object of empirical study in this research is the
municipal headquarters of Santa Maria de Jetibá. The territorial cutout comprises the
limits of the São Luiz River, an affluent of the Santa Maria da Vitória River, located in
the northern mountainous region of the state of Espírito Santo. In this region of the
State the influence of the Pomeranian immigrants installed there at the end of the
XIX century. Historically, the region has developed, mainly, with the agricultural
production of family base in small properties. Nowadays, Santa Maria de Jetibá is the
largest egg producing municipality in Brazil, being the urban area of the municipal
headquarters WHERE most of the farms are concentrated. Thus, it is believed that it is
a territory that is going through or will go through significant territorial transformations,
mainly due to the growth and modernization of agriculture. Therefore, the relations
between society and nature in the processes of territorializing in the headquarters of
the municipality were investigated. The methodology used in this research includes
the bibliographical review of the Italian territorialist school regarding territorial
representation, with the production of mappings in which the aim is to conjecture
territorial active complexes with the knowledge and recognition of the elements that
constitute the territory. It is concluded from the territorial representation that this
cutout is characterized mainly by its field-city-industry relationship, presenting an
important cognitive foundation of the territory, the Pomeranian immigrants and
material foundation of the territory the waterways. Finally, it is conjectured that the
area of study goes through a process of extended deterritorialization, or uprooting, or
even the reproduction of multi-territorialities, due mainly to the careless advance of
agroindustry and agribusiness, also manifest in water domination.
