Summary: In September and October 2016, drinking water supplies in the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória
were not sufficient to fully meet the population due to the drought. Thus, for the first time in the capital's
history, it was necessary to make water rationing by rotation of supply (CESAN, 2016). In the light of the
above, there is a growing concern with sustainability in the construction sector and the tendency to seek
to adapt to the scenario of the water crisis, in order to minimize its impacts on the urban network
(PROENÇA, GHISI et al. 2011). In view of the need to take sustainable actions, the question that
questions this research is: Why do not new buildings of multifamily buildings adopt building facilities for
the use of alternative sources of non-potable water? In response to the motivating questioning of the
present research, the following hypothesis was raised: new multifamily buildings are not designed with
facilities for alternative non-potable water sources due to technical, financial, legal, political,
environmental and cultural. In order to verify the veracity of the hypothesis raised, this research has as
objective: to identify the reasons for the non-adoption of building facilities to use alternative sources of
non-potable water in new multifamily buildings in the municipalities of Vitória, Vila Velha and Serra. In
order to achieve and complement the proposed objective, two specific objectives were defined: 1)
according to the perception of the parties involved in construction, recognize the obstacles to the
adoption of building facilities for use of alternative sources of water drinking water in multifamily buildings
in Vitória, Vila Velha and Serra; 2) to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of building facilities
from alternative non-potable water sources in the construction of multi-family buildings in Vitória, Vila
Velha and Serra. The research was delimited in three stages, that corresponded to the actions to the
accomplishment of the specific objectives. Based on a qualitative evaluation of the answers obtained in
the application of the questionnaires, in stage 1, those raised by the hypothesis of this research were
recognized as obstacles. In step 2 the exploration of the physical model by the design tests of options
A, B, C and D allowed the conclusion of the technical feasibility evaluation of the application of the
building facilities for the use of alternative non-potable water sources. In comparing the cost data
between the options of the building systems A, B, C and D, in step 3 it was possible to evaluate the
reasons for the adoption or not of the building system systems for use of alternative non-potable water
sources, related to financial factor.
Keywords: alternative sources of non-potable water, gray water reuse, rainwater use, condensed water
use.
