Summary: The purpose of this research is to reflect upon the situation of the Historical and Archeological Site of São José do Queimado. Located in the district of Queimado, Município da Serra, in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, it has been included in the list of historical and cultural sites that are protected by the state. The insurrection of Queimado, in 1849, is of extreme relevance to the history of the village, Vila de São José do Queimado, which had its beginning, peak and its decadence determined by different issues. The ruins of the church and the cemetery are the only witnesses of this piece of history, which has been kept alive in great part due to Macroecumenical celebrations that are held on the 19th of March each year. The historical site located in the rural area was contemplated with a project of revitalization, which has not yet been implemented. However, next to other projects idealized for their surroundings, they can have good or bad impacts to its cultural and historical landscape. In this context, the aim of this research is to make an inventory of all the actions and projects to be implemented in this very site. There was also a detailed study of the symbolism of these ruins, celebrated in rituals to keep the history of its ancient people alive. The methodology included historical, iconographic and theoretical researches, among others. The theoretical study greatly helped us understand important issues to be considered in any debate regarding the maintenance of this important heritage in the future, such as: management, sustainability, as well as the protection of its cultural and historical heritage, symbolism and cultural landscape. In short, besides contributing to a better knowledge of this historical site in particular, this study will enable further research about it, and will serve as an example to similar historical and cultural sites. Therefore, our aim is to contribute to future debates about this issue, highlighting the participation of the community, public power and private partnerships, and discuss the best plan of action to the management and sustainability of the Historical and Archeological Site of São José do Queimado, as well as its surroundings.
Key words: Management, sustainability, symbolism, cultural landscape.
