Summary: The use of natural light in the internal environment benefits users and influences directly on their behaviour and sense of comfort. These features, when applied to educational environments are even more important, affecting the students’ development and learning. For this reason, researches have been performed in order to optimize the use of natural light in internal environments, increasing its performance and reducing occasional drawbacks. Amongst different approaches, the use of external devices is found important at assisting the distribution and intensity of natural light in internal spaces. Being that, this research assessed the performance of façade elements and their contribution to provide natural light in a classroom at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo, campus Colatina. The method was based on computer simulations using Troplux 7 software, WHERE 12 different models of light reflectors were presented, being 6 models associated with light shelves and other 6 with brise soleil. The simulations were performed for every day of the year, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, considering the main cardinal directions (North, South, East and West) and in three sky conditions: overcast skies (CIE 3), partly cloudy (CIE 7) and clear sky (CIE 12). The analysis showed the availability of natural light in the internal environment, with the percentage of hours of the day in the intervals of the UDI (Useful Daylight Illuminance) throughout the year, the percentages of uniformity of natural light in the internal environment and the behaviour of natural light along the extension of the room. The results showed that the existence of a reflective surface near the window influenced the results, regardless of the light shelf or the brise soleil. It was possible to conclude that the use of light shelves proved to be grater the the brise soleil, with greater acceptance of light within the desirable range (500 ≤ E ≤ 2000lx), with reductions of excessive illuminance and greater uniformity of illuminance on the internal environment. However, the results presented by the models associated with the brise soleil proved to be equal or a little lower than obtained by the models associated with the light shelf, demonstrating suitability of devices on the analysed variables.
