Summary: The master's research - São Mateus: do Lugar à Vila - is part of the History of
Colonial Urbanism in Brazil, it aims the settlement of the Cricaré / São Mateus river
under the hypothesis that it is long-lived, characterized by some. Settlement/non
settlement, and probably resulting from the need to approximate urban centers of a
larger urban complex, such as Bahia, Espírito Santo, or even Rio de Janeiro. The
Cricaré river has been part of the Brazilian colonial historiography since the first
century, having been divulged in Lisbon as a mean of arriving at the mines, through
the Tratado da Terra do Brasil, de Pêro de Magalhães Gândavo, ca 1568; later in
Madrid in 1587, in Tratado descritivo do Brasil, de Gabriel Soares de Sousa and in
the beginning of the seventeenth century in the Livro que dá Rezão do Estado do
Brasil, com ilustrações de Teixeira Albernaz I. Its purpose is to identify moments of
settlement in the region of São Mateus, between the sixteenth and nineteenth
centuries, so that concretely it can arrive at an understanding of urban evolution of S.
Mateus. The methodology used is archivist research and collection, and it sustaines
on the theoretical-methodological assumption proposed by Reis Filho, in the work
Contribuição ao estudo da Evolução Urbana do Brasil- 1500/1720, based on
sociology and geography. The contribution of studies by Beatriz Siqueira Bueno on
the "concept of territory and its links to cartography", as well as by Pedro Almeida
Vasconcelos, on historical urban geography and cartography is essential. The
iconographic records, when they exist, can prove the materialization of the strategies
or actions of the agents involved, but will be the confrontation of the different kind of
documents of primary source that will allow to evaluate the continuity, and / or
effectiveness eficiency of regulating principles of the territory. From the analysis of
these data, the obtained results allows to construct conjecturative maps,
representative of specific moments of consolidation and urban evolution of the Vila
de S. Mateus. Thus, the research is organized in three chapters. In the first chapter,
the analysis of the geographic-historical recognition, through the cartographic
iconography, it identifies the continuities and / or changes in the appropriation of the
space, materialized in the territory. In the second chapter, dedicated to the
settlement, it identifies moments of settlement of the territory. In the third chapter,
with the results obtained from the analysis of documentary research, presented in the
two previous chapters, three conjectural maps are elaborated, which comprise the
interval of almost 100 years of São Mateus as Vila, aiming at the understanding of its
urban evolution. In conclusion, this study reveals moments of settlement in the region
of São Mateus, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, and concretely, the
understanding of the urban evolution of S. Mateus, elevated to “Vila”, in 1764 and
“Cidade”, in 1848.
