Summary: The concept of cultural landscape go through several science fields, being discussed in the fields of Geography, Architecture, Urbanism, as examples, and specifically in Cultural Heritage field. Its extent presuppose an approach of immaterial and material cultural goods associated with the integration of human been with territory and the natural environment. This work paper investigates the term ‘cultural landscape’ as a concept and its institutionalization as an instrument for preservation belonging to the international and national public politics. Besides that, embraces Geography on the concept of place, bringing contributions for this research. After it, this work paper looks for the possible repercussion of the concept in the case of Vila de Itaúnas, on the north coast of state of Espírito Santo.
Itaúnas is a place marked for a set of myths about its history. The most emblematic myth concerns to the burial of the old Vila, that brings with it a base of formation of local memory, marked for symbols and meanings. After the burial, the local population established itself on the opposite river bank of Rio Itaúnas, bringing with itself the urban characteristics - the form of the streets, layout and the construction techniques - and the traditional way of life. This research exposes the symbolic elements that characterize Vila de Itaúnas, built from studies about meanings created for human groups that experience the spaces of the Vila, producing the symbolic local places. The research also points these places as spatial manifestations of culture with political, religious, ethnics and historical meanings, all of them impregnated with symbolic singularities. Thereunto, the work paper uses as a methodology a theory research about the origins of the concept cultural landscape, as a study field of Geography, and its insertion as a preservation instrument of the cultural heritage. Includes also, as methodology instruments, a case study of materiality of the Vila de Itaúnas, adopt as a method the participant observation, evidencing existing social and economics dynamics, field survey in loco and formulation of interpretations, by means of texts, maps and distinct graphic schemes. This work paper concludes that the location of Itaúnas comprises a small village full of symbols built for its inhabitants, and for the tourists that attend the place, in continuous processes and dynamics of construction of symbolic places, that in turn shape the landscapes also in continuous construction.
